Why Hydroseed?

If you’re in need of a new lawn, or a complete overhaul of an existing lawn, hydroseeding may be a great option. Hydroseeding is a fast, cost-effective way to grow grass. Generally, it’s slightly more expensive than traditional methods of overseeding with dry seed, but it produces grass more evenly and quickly. It’s also a less expensive option than installing sod.

How does it work?
High quality grass seed, wood fibers, fertilizer, binding agents and water are measured and combined into a hydroseed mixture. The mixture is then sprayed onto the lawn area with specialized landscape equipment. The wood fibers and binding agents in the mixture help the seed and fertilizer attach to the prepared area and work to retain moisture and deflect wind, rain and pests.

The protective mulch covering is typically a green shade that is more attractive than straw that is often used as protection with dry seeding. A blend of grass seed in the hydroseed mixture is selected based on your property conditions, including how much sun/shade you get, the weather/time of year, as well as the soil type and terrain.

Germination of seed will depend on the time of year and the weather, but with ideal conditions, grass may be visible within a week of hydroseeding (sometimes in just 4/5 days!). Dry seeding can take 4-6 weeks before grass is visible. Also, hydroseeding mulch adds to the humus content of a lawn as it decomposes, which is great for the soil and, ultimately, your grass. For dry seeding, straw is often used to protect the newly laid seed, but the bacterial makeup of straw can leach essential nitrogen from your soil as it decomposes, which is not great for your soil, or your grass.

Is it better than sod?
If you want instant gratification (and who doesn’t?) you probably lean towards sod for installing a new lawn. But it’s expensive. Hydroseeding is generally a third of the cost (or less) than sod and produces a lush lawn that is just as nice looking as sod. Also, there is a risk of sod “not taking” to your lawn; where it doesn’t actually take root in your lawn, but lays above it and can be rolled right up long after it has been laid. With hydroseeding, your new grass seedlings are grown right into your soil.

If you’re thinking of installing a new lawn, consider hydroseeding. You’ll be surprised how inexpensive it is to have a spectacular lawn in just a couple of weeks. Call Gardenin' Angels for an estimate at 774-284-1171.
