Hydroseeding -What is it and why do it?

hydroseeding
Most people want a lawn that is covered in healthy, weed-free grass. Hydroseeding is a fantastic way to achieve a lush lawn more effectively than traditional hand seeding or sod applications. But what is it exactly?

Hydroseeding combines grass seed, fertilizer, lime, moisture retention polymers, mulch and water into a mixture that is sprayed onto ground to establish grass growth. This hydroseed mixture is prepared on site to create a fresh and even combination that is sprayed over prepared ground in a uniform layer. Hydroseeding has advantages over traditional seeding with quicker and more uniform seed germination.

Hydroseeding is typically more effective because mulch in the mixture acts as the growth medium for the seed. When the appropriate type and rate of mulch is applied, it provides moisture retention for faster germination, insulation from temperature extremes, contains no weed seed, and sticks to the ground to prevent seeds from blowing away or being eaten by birds or pests.

The Hydroseeding mixture can be adjusted with various additives to create the ideal growth environment for the seed. The other big advantage versus conventional seeding methods is the labor savings. This is because all of the ingredients that you want to apply to the seed bed are combined into the slurry and applied at the same time. The conventional seeding process usually requires each item to be applied one at a time in layers.

BENEFITS OF HYDROSEEDING
  • Hydroseeding is the most economical choice for establishing the desired turf without the expense, time, material costs or installation demands of sodding or traditional hand seeding methods. In a typical hydroseeding application, 3 workers can accomplish what is would generally take 6 workers to fulfill given the same amount of work time using sod.A hydroseeded lawn is often much healthier, greener and longer lasting than sodding or hand seeding applications because the root establishment is deeper into the soil and avoids the shock of being transplanted into foreign soils.

  • Hydroseeding provides a thicker, more uniform lawn that essentially consists of a mat of interlocking fibers creating the ideal growing environment that doesn’t have the threat of seams showing as with sod or sparse, patchy areas with hand seeding.

  • Hydroseeding is incredibly versatile, as it can be applied to residential and commercial landscapes of all shapes and sizes including hillsides, golf courses, landfills, wildfire repairs, schools and parks.

  • With hydroseeding’s ability to retain up to 10 times its weight in water, it’s definitely proved to be the best method for fast, healthy germination, high plant survival and protection of seeds with a moisture sealant. No other method of growing grass has this water retention advantage.

It's nice that hydroseeded lawn typically stay health and green for longer periods of time. My yard is in really bad shape right now, so I've been thinking of ripping it out and restarting. Do you have any tips for choosing a hydroseeding expert to help me.

Hi Taylor, it is hard for me to tell you what to do, I would need to know which part of the United states you are living, the kind of grass the we use here in Massachusetts is not the same as in Georgia for example. And every Yard is different, You need to know how much water, the amount of sun light your grass will have. If you go to a Site One store they are very knowledgeable.

What is hydroseed?
It is a process of mixing a high-quality grass seed, starter fertilizer, a wood fiber blend of mulch, and a glue type tackifier with water. This mixture is then sprayed onto your soil.

Why use hydroseed?
Hydroseed is a great option for seeding your yard. The mixture binds the bluegrass seeds to the soil better than plain seed and straw. The fertilizer gives the seed better nutrients while it takes root, helping the bluegrass to germinate quickly.

Our wood fiber mulch holds 10 times its weight in moisture. This is important when you consider the fact that moisture is the key element that promotes quick growth. It is a much less expensive option than sod and it yields a great looking bluegrass lawn.

My property currently doesn't have any grass. I really want to grow grass this year. However, I don't really want to deal with sod. It is great to know that Hyrdoseeding provides a thicker and more uniform lawn than even sod would. That is great be I really want to have a nice looking yard.

Sometimes you will need to replace the soil before hydroseeding, if the soil is really good you just need to aerate the whole yard 2 or 3 times and put down grass seed using a spreader, you might need to do in the spring and fall for better results, also hire a company to fertilize and control the weeds.

I thought it was really interesting how the article said that hydroseeding provides a thicker lawn that doesn't have the threat of seams showing as with sod. My brother recently built a new home that currently has a bunch of dirt patches instead of a proper lawn. It may be beneficial for him to hire a company that can help him hydroseed his yard so that he can have a full, grassy lawn.

That's interesting that if you hydroseed your lawn will be thicker and more uniform. Recently, I've noticed that my lawn has a lot of problems. Some of the grass is dead and at other parts it's too thick. I'll have to look into hydroseeding more.

I loved how you mentioned that hydroseeding is really versatile! My husband and I are wanting to take the rocks out of our front yard, and have some grass installed so that our kids can have a place to play, and I can have a place to start a garden. We'll have to look into trying hydroseeding for our yard!

It got me when you said that the most economical options for sodding are hydroseeding which can help achieve the turf you wanted without that much expense, time, and materials costs. In that case, I should suggest to my dad to hire a sod installation company to work on his backyard, because it would be helpful for his limited budget. And he just wants his property to look greener, because there are patches on his soil these past few months now.

Hydroseeding can be customized for specific soil and climate conditions, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to establish vegetation in large areas.

It stood out to me when you mentioned that hydroseeding provides a more uniform lawn. It seems like you would want to have a more uniform lawn if you have kids that like to play on grass. A lawn that is more uniform would probably help prevent injuries should your kids fall down while they are playing on the grass.
