Hardscapes are the solid, built surfaces in an outdoor space like patios, pathways, fire pits, pool surrounds, decorative walls, even outdoor kitchens and living rooms. A hardscape can add immediate value in both the aesthetic and/or function of your home and also by increasing the actual property value of your home. A few things to consider when your thinking of adding a hardscape to your property: Take your landscape into account. You might want to hire a professional to help you with this step. While it seems simple to decide whether you want a patio here or a pathway there, factors like how much turf you’d like to keep (or add), what focal points you might like, where the sun rises and sets, whether and where you have a septic tank or other underground lines, traffic patterns and day-to-day functionality for your family should be considered. Preserve greenery. Grass, plants, flowers and other vegetation provide a nice contrast to the stark, solid surface of a hardscape. Consider a stone wall with tall flowers or trees behind it, or a patio that abuts a grassy area. An area of turf provides a pleasant playing area for children and pets and also can be a cool relief on hot days. Understand water and drainage patterns. Nothing can be more damaging to a hardscape than drainage problems. Especially in Massachusetts and other areas in the northeast where snow and ice can leave an impact, you must plan how drainage will be affected when you add your hardscape to your property. Even if you don't think there are any water drainage issues, it’s prudent to level out any surfaces where you might put a hardscape or have the grade as a decline away from your house. Choose materials that work for you. Your home has a style that you’ll want to extend in your hardscape. You also have your own sense of style that you’ll want to incorporate. Consider these styles when looking at stones, bricks, pavers and other materials. Don’t feel limited to one color or one texture. Having a variety of two to three colors and textures tends to provide most homeowners with an overall look and feel they enjoy. The size of your property and the hardscape your considering should influence how many different materials you choose as well. Hire help. Even if you typically do your own landscaping and gardening, it’s a good idea to call in the experts for a hardscape project. Professional landscape designers can offer suggestions for a hardscape design that works with your current property landscape, provide advice on appropriate materials, and help identify any issues that could cause trouble. They typically have the complete knowledge of the many steps involved in hardscape installation. When you're hiring a pro, ask for references and to see examples of their hardscape work. I have always wanted a fire pit in my backyard and this summer may be the time we make it happen. I love the design of the one shown here with the stone patio. Something like this would work so well in my yard.

I liked it when you pointed out that hiring a hardscaping professional is better than DIY because they can point out exactly the kind of materials that will work well with the landscaping. To be honest, I am not very good at designs, so I think it really is for the best that I hire a pro. I thought using river stones will work well with the current landscaping, but everyone said it won't. That proves it.

Basically, as your article suggests, hardscaping is like landscaping but dealing with more man-made products or solid materials like stones. That sounds perfect for my needs since we are just about to have our backyard renovated to be a garden soon. Hopefully, we could get a good hardscape contractor to help us create the perfect backyard we are dreaming of. Thanks!

I appreciate what you said about how vegetation can disrupt your pumps. I need to hire someone to do an inspection. I think my sewer line is clogged.

Thanks for the tip about understanding how drainage systems will be affected by hardscaping. My daughter just bought an old house that she wants to flip this summer. She's hoping to make a really nice patio with lots of planter boxes for the back garden area.

Picking different textures and patterns when deciding what to use for a hardscape design could really keep things interesting. Combining as many styles and types of materials could add variation and leave us with an impressive look at the end of the day. I'll look for any place that offers brick materials of different colors to use for our upcoming project.

I want to have a nice patio for my back yard. It makes sense that getting a good floor area installed would be beneficial! I'll be sure to use some nice and durable tiles for this project.

I totally agree when you said that professionals would definitely have suggestions regarding the hardscape designs that would work on your property. In my opinion, letting commercial hardscape paving specialists work on establishments would also be for their benefit. I think people will be more enticed to visit their stores when the outer appearance has a catchy or trendy design.

My cousin is trying to beautify her home's exterior space so she can welcome her clients without worry. I like your suggestion of investing in rustic-themed decor and a walkway that can welcome you home! Maybe we should find a landscaping expert that'll help her with this in the future.

I love that you suggested opting for two or three colors as well as other textures to get the best outcome for the hardscaping project you wanted. I will mention that to contractors that I can find here in Sandwich, Massachusetts. It will definitely bring life to the house that I moved into, since it needs a little improvement which is why the cost of this property is not that high.
